Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Amsterdam

Start your rail tour in Amsterdam, a city of contrasts. Amidst the 17th-century canals bubbles a progressive and dynamic city. Use bike and canal tours to zip around attractions.

Bounce between museums and high-spirited public squares, sampling Amsterdam’s myriad delights hidden amongst the canals and striking architecture.

On the first night, forget plans and head out on foot to discover a city made for leisurely exploration.
• Start by wandering around the historic center, drinking in the picturesque setting and the boundless energy.
• Stop in the genteel Jordaan district or soak up the youthful ambiance in the Leidseplein.
• End the day with a glass of Amstel or alcohol-free pilsner in a welcoming brown café.

Day 2

Full day in Amsterdam

Make the most of your second day by utilizing different transport to explore the compact city. The city center crackles with energy, but you don’t have to travel far to find more tranquil highlights.

• Do like the locals and jump on a bike (tour or hire). Easily reach all corners of the city, from Dam Square to the Vondelpark.
• Take to the water on a glass-topped boat cruise around the spellbinding canals.
• Refuel with freshly cut fries doused in mayonnaise before hitting world-class museums.

Day 3

IC train ride to Berlin

Time to pack the clogs and grab a kaas broodje (cheese sandwich) before a high-speed train journey to the German capital, Berlin. Dutch and German landscapes unfold as you zip to Hanover and then onto your end destination.

Three nights in the German capital is a chance to move through chapters of history and soak up the dynamism of a European powerhouse. The modern Reichstag, the towering Brandenburg Gate, an island filled with top-tier museums, or dinner on the Berlin skyline: there is something to excite every mood.

Our suggested itinerary covers all the top things to do. Start the first night slowly.

• After checking in, head to vibrant Alexanderplatz, Germany’s largest public square.
• Take the elevator up the soaring Fernsehturm TV tower, where a revolving restaurant and citywide views await.
• Stop to admire the majestic and illuminated Brandenburg Gate.

Day 4

Full day in Berlin

Refreshed and raring to go, the first full day in the German capital is all about historical landmarks. A handful are unmissable, from moving memorials to fragments of hope and optimism.

• Linger at the haunting Holocaust Memorial.
• Continue your history tour with a trip to the Berlin Wall Memorial.

Day 5

Full day in Berlin

This is the last day to check off leading Berliner attractions with an action-packed itinerary showcasing different sides of the city. See shadows of the DDR and crown the evening with rousing top-flight entertainment. Day 5 will be a whirlwind of activity.

• Begin with a morning stroll through Tiergarten, the former hunting preserve turned sprawling urban park.
• Take a short cruise along the Spree for an alternative perspective.
• Recharge with currywurst and fries in the 18th-century Gendarmenmarkt.
• Head over to former East Germany and visit the intriguing DDR Museum.
• Complete your cultural immersion at the Berliner Philharmonie, home to the acclaimed Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Day 6

ICE train ride to Munich

It’s tschüss to Berlin as day 6 sees you boarding a slick ICE train to the Bavarian capital, Munich. Fill up on brot and käse at the breakfast buffet for a 4 hour rail journey through the German countryside, with diversions through well-known cities like Leipzig and Nuremberg.

There are two nights to discover Munich. Enough time to explore the bewitching old town, sit in fabled beer halls, and explore past and present in regal palaces and futuristic museums.

Stately Munich is the perfect complement to edgy Berlin and a picturesque endpoint to your German odyssey. Upon arrival, drop your bags off and then set out to wander around Munich:

• Head to the altstadt (old town) and admire the charming town halls, old and new.
• Wander past the monolithic Frauenkirche, then stop in the ornate Asamkirche (church).
• Enjoy a nightcap in the fabled Hofbräuhaus, the 16th-century tavern that spawned many imitators.

Day 7

Full day in Munich

Day 7 is a chance to explore Munich and enjoy its refined blend of old and new. Public transport opens up different corners of Germany’s southern jewel, so make the most of your only full day in Munich to dart between local wonders.

• Start the day with a taste of Bavaria at the centuries-old farmers market, Viktualienmarkt.
• Hop on the U-Bahn to the exciting Olympiapark, the site of the 1972 Olympics, and home to the intriguing BMW Museum.
• Step back in time at the 18th-century Nymphenburg Palace, a slice of royal decadence on the edge of Munich.
• Return to central Munich via the delightful 19th-century square, Odeonsplatz.
• End the evening with a tour of the raucous breweries of Munich.

Day 8

Alpine train ride to Zurich

The eighth day promises a scenic train journey through Bavarian towns, past lakes and lush meadows, en route to Zurich. Fill up on weisswurst before boarding the train to Switzerland’s largest city.

Zurich is a beguiling mix of natural beauty and monied modernity. The financial hub boasts medieval churches, refined art galleries, and pioneering purveyors of gastronomy. Two nights is enough time to glimpse the multiple personalities that underpin Switzerland’s most stimulating city.

• Start your Zurich experience by losing yourself in the altstadt, old town.
• Enjoy the views from the bell tower of Grossmünster, a beautiful 12th-century church.
• End the day at a classy restaurant in the fashionable Zurich-West district.

Day 9

Full day in Zurich

Dive into Zurich life on day 9 with a whistlestop tour of leading attractions. Try to steal moments savoring Zurich’s natural charms, recharging your batteries before heading to the bright lights of Paris the next day.

• Invigorate your morning with a stroll along the promenades of magical Lake Zürich. Or take a cruise for a more relaxing experience.

• Enjoy the views and chess games at the site of an old Roman fort, Lindenhof.

Day 10

High-speed TGV-ride to Paris

Day 10, and your dazzling rail tour rolls into its final destination. The high-speed TGV trains from Zurich to Paris allow time to enjoy breakfast and load up on Swiss chocolate. Head to the upscale Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich for a choice of premium chocolatiers and a moment of retail indulgence.

Then say bienvenue à Paris, as your rail tour takes you to the French capital for three fully-laden nights in Europe’s most romanticized city.

Move from acclaimed museums, photograph famous landmarks, unwind in quirky quartiers, and walk in the footsteps of global icons at illustrious cafés. Dine in chic brasseries, shop at colorful markets, and immerse yourself in Paris’s inimitable charms.

Day 11

Full day in Paris

Your first full day in Paris is time to poke around intriguing quartiers minutes apart. A chance to see some of the city’s unmissable sights and discover the streets where Paris’s story began.

• Get the day underway in Le Marais, a vibrant quartier brimming with museums and trendy eateries.
• Cross the venerable Pont Neuf to Île de la Cité. The ancient center of Paris is home to the regal Notre Dame and the mesmeric Sainte Chapelle.
• Continue over the Seine to the cobblestone streets of the Latin Quarter and visit the imposing mausoleum of French icons, the Panthéon.
• Make time to savor citywide views from the Eiffel Tower.

Day 12

Full day in Paris

The last night of your tour is a chance to explore disparate corners of central Paris, visiting offbeat attractions and some of the most celebrated sights in Paris.

Departure from Paris

After a spellbinding rail journey through four vastly different European countries, it's time to bid au revoir to Paris. Before you zip the suitcase and steal a last sentimental glance at the City of Love, visit local haunts for one final gourmet moment and to grab last-minute souvenirs.

• Stop in bustling Rue Mouffetard, a foodie haven and busy street market.
• Enjoy an al fresco breakfast or lunch in the exquisite Luxembourg Gardens.
